Hey guys I really need some help on my 2002 Ranger auto transmission. These problems have been happening for about a year now and I can't figure them out. Every time I start my truck and put it in gear it is extremely delayed until finally engaging. This goes for reverse and drive. It started out with 1st and 2nd gear but now it is increasing. Once I am on the road, my transmission constantly slips out of gear for a good amount of time. I can even be in 3rd or 4th gear going around 40 MPH and it will slip, then engage. Slip, then engage for about 10 minutes. Every time i stop at a light,stop sign, or hill it goes back in to neutral and I am just stuck there until it kicks back in. The disengagement also happens a lot when I slow down and take turns. I replace my transmission fluid normally. I have been worried about this for a while now so any advice or ideas about what could be happening would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance!

Sounds like a fluid level problem. Could it have the wrong filter? Like a 2x4 filter on a 4x4 will act this way. OD light flashing?

Yes, i actually forgot to mention that the OD light flashes sometimes. What could be the causes of this also?

pull the codes. It'll reveal a lot. Not sure that your local auto parts store are capable of pulling transmission codes. May have to go to a shop.

You might consider that your issue is the speed sensor, there is a video on this site that refers to it. Sounds like you have all the signs of it going out on you.

Also sounds like it could just be in need of a rebuild. Don't know how many miles are on it, but this is a classic sign of fluid pressure being low. Can be low because the fluid level is low, seals failing internally, or pump failing. First step, check the codes. Also probably should have done this when it started, not a year later when it is almost undrivable. That is a recipe for major repair bills...

The OD light flashing is an indication that the transmission has set a trouble code.

The symptoms sound like a low fluid condition. It is possible for the level on the stick to look good because there is fluid squirting on the stick, even though the level is low. Try this. Run the engine and shift through the gears. Then shut the engine down and immediately pull the stick, wipe it, and reinsert it to check the level. The indicated level will be unaffected by any spray from possible ruptured gaskets, and the fluid does not have time to drain back to affect the level. If it is low add until it shows full on the stick using this method of checking the level.
