Default heeelp!! High pitched noise coming from trans/clutch (video) !!

Hello!

I have a 1993 Ford Ranger, manual, 5 speed, 4WD 4.L ...

I recently had been 4 wheeling in the truck in thick snow and revving it fairly high. On the drive home i noticed a high pitched noise that follows the revs of each gear. I cannot hear it in 4th, reverse or when the clutch is pushed in.

I checked the trans fluid which was low, filled it (about 1.25L) - noise persists.

The truck still runs great, and changes gear fine. I have uploaded a video where you can hear the noise from 1st gear to 4th and back again. the truck also sounds a little funny when idling, though back to normal when the clutch is pushed in.

video:

any ideas????!!!! thank you !

If it goes away when the the clutch is pushed in, Id bet a left testicle that the release bearing (Throw-out bearing it is often called) is bad or going there.

For the trouble its worth, I personally would just get a clutch kit; seemingly they're all made by the same company LUX and different companies stamp them theirs and put them in their own pretty boxes. Several people may have suggestions for saving $1.20 to $10 but I'd throw my money at rockauto.com unless you have a specific autoparts store you like to support.

Replace the Bearing, clutch, and pressure plate and since you're in there. It would be best to replace the Clutch Slave cylinder as well, also available on rockauto.

Here is what your in for the most part.. Plus there is plenty of support on here to guide you along the way if your mechanical skills are even moderate to Noob...

reason for the gambit of parts to replace in there is because if your in that deep, you don't want to go back in twice to do the same work.

.

----------

Hope that helps..

Are you sure the noise would be the release bearing if the noise only happens when the clutch is engaged? The throwout bearing is active when the clutch is disengaged/ clutch pedal is pushed in. Does it happen in neutral? Might be the tranny input bearing? Just my .02 cents

i forgot to mention that i have had a new clutch kit and slave installed not all that long ago. so i would be surprised if it has anything to do with that

I understand the perspective but other than a divorce in life, I dont put my testicles on the line for just anything.

When the clutch is engaged its in a gear or neutral. if the noise is present when the pedal is let out and goes away WHEN the clutch is depressed; mechanically there should be pressure against the bearing and the noise should go away.

You're correct in what your asking but I think your perspective on which way the OP was describing the issue or the way you may think the TOB works might be misunderstood.

With that, I am not saying there couldn't be another related issue, I am basing it off of past experience with many other vehicles I've worked on and or owned in past. Even if something in the pressure plate was dragging, replacement of all moving components would surely remove the concern and with the mechanics of it, there's nothing else that wouldn't be replaced having an issue with another in there and if the noise goes away with the clutch pushed in, its obvious that its not in the trans itself at that point. That I'm 99% sure of.

The clutch and its assembly is the weak point in a trans and 'could be' thought of as a fusable link in ways.. [in ways]

You may question there warranty on labor. However, because its a "wearable" function on a car. Don't be a bit surprised if they put it off on your "driving abilities or habits"...

I bet its a bearing inside the transmission. Why? Because the noise goes away when the clutch is pushed in, and when the transmission is in 4th gear. What's special about 4th gear? It's direct drive. For every 1 turn the crankshaft makes, the driveshaft makes 1 turn.

Again, I'm not saying that i am 100% just 99%.. Unless OP verifies further transmission damage; I still stand by my original comment as the issue and the least expensive solution to start with. Especially considering the OP has recently had Clutch service work having been done fairly recently.. it would seem logical and possible that the work performed wasn't to par or the possibility of a faulty bearing out of the box, I'm betting not original parts were used to save costs and reap more profit, probably less than 7500 miles since the work was performed.. Im comfy making that call

For warranty labor purposes from the shop/mechanic, Id suggest having them further diagnose the situation and find your resolve.

That's my thought pattern as well. I think the lack of noise in 4th is the clue here. To me it sounds like a pinion from a planetary gearset when you hit it w/ compressed air and it whizzes, but manual = no planetary. Something similar exists though I'm sure. It sounds like a smaller gear being angry.

Thanks for all your comments guys,

by the sounds of it its going to be a pretty costly job unless i'd be mechanical enough to take apart a transmission myself? Never done it before but something i'd be interested in trying.

Drove to work today 10 minute drive, the truck runs like top, just that damn whistling noise!

You might start looking for a replacement trans. If you keep driving yours it will continue to be damaged. I've been told, though I don't know first hand, that the T5 trans is often not cost-effective to rebuild vs finding a replacement.

are you saying i need to go back to where i got the clutch done before and look into warranty? unfortunately that place is on the other side of the province.

That is what he's saying, and it sounds like that is not an option?

Haha i could understand why you are selective in putting the jewels on the line then! I definately didnt rule out the throwout bearing, i would just think that the bearing would squeal while it is under a load as compared to being exposed to a less forceful load. Sorry if i came across wrongly, was just thinking outloud.

Likely not cost effective, plenty of those transmissions available for a fraction of the cost/labor intensity. More than likely already pulled from a good donor and as such more visible to suspect leaks and issues (although again not 100% free from), and as a direct swap.

True statement...

ONLY if they're willing to stand up behind their work. If thats a matter of a few hundred empty miles ( HA, I know how Canada can be) and become a costly geolocation issues, may need to enlist some new mechanics or step into the arena and try on some gloves. Plenty of good online references, videos on YouTube, and you have a huge onset of knowledgeable guys/gals on here too. At the very least, its a new experience to undertake and try your hands at. Who knows, maybe you were destined to become a trans mechanic and didnt know it :P

Well after getting them back in a textbook shitty divorce, Im pretty selective on my battles.. and no worries I take no offense I'm not always right 100% but I may say something that leads to solving the issue(s).

Unless we're talking about dealing with divorce in court.. dont listen to me when I talk about that. regular court cases yes.. take in all you can. Divorce court No, def not.

You'll either end up in contempt of or she'll end up in a woodchipper and you again in jail.. not good..

Oh btw.. You can contact for better information on T5 or Transmissions in General here. As stated on their site: They "are an Elite Tremec Transmission Distributor, making us the best source for all of your T-5, T-45, T-56, T-56 Magnum, TKO-500, TKO-600, 3650 and 6060 transmission needs. We have an extensive inventory of complete Tremec transmissions and parts."

You'll want to ask for for Paul, Paul is THE trans God. Tell him James from Forward Motion Motorsports referred you.
