Default Ranger 4x4 gearing

I have a '01 ford ranger 4x4 V6 4.0 with 419 gears. Gas mileage is horrible. I want to step down to a 3.55 gear. Would that hurt the truck at all as for power band from the engine aspect. I know it will definitely lower my rpm's. Give me some input please.

I assume you mean you have 4.10's.

When switching to a taller gear, you will notice a reduction in acceleration.

Given you are 4WD - you're looking at $500 to $1,000 per axle to regear your vehicle (unless you do it yourself).

With that in mind, you might want to look into what the payback period would be when it comes to the fuel mileage increase.

The math might not justify things unless you drive it a ton.

Also, keep in mind that 4WD Rangers w/ the 4.0 engine are not exactly known for even decent fuel mileage on the best of days.

Not even close to worth it. The only place you would see an improvement is cruising at a constant speed down the highway, and it's gonna be marginal at best. It's gonna hurt ya everywhere else.

It's a ranger; it's not gonna get the best mpg. And you have the heaviest model with the largest engine. If you're averaging in the mid to upper teens mixed city/highway, then you're doin about the best you're gonna get.

Yes 4.10 gears. Sorry I fat fingered that.
I'm getting 14 mgp. I feel its horrible. A truck this light should be better.
RPM's seem to be really high. 2500 @ 70 MPH
All my mileage is hyw. 70 mile round trip. This truck was bought for commute purpose only.
Automatic transmission. Could there be a issue with my torque converter not going into Over Drive?
Mabey exhaust and cold air intake might help? Does anyone offer any programming for these trucks?

Honestly, your selection wasn't the best choice for that 'main goal'.

IMO: 14-17 MPG's is very, very common for 2001 & newer 4WD Rangers w/ the 4.0 SOHC. Sure, some get more, some less - but on average...I don't think that's overly usual give the conbination.

Checkout this thread, and you'll see how others fair in terms of fuel mileage with your setup: Hows your GAS MILEAGE on ur truck? Let me know here.

Sounds like you're doing good, torque converter should be fine.

And I have a CAI in my truck. The only plus side to it is having that as a bragging right... No preformance improvments

Everything seems normal to me.

Nope - you wont gain any noticeable increase in fuel mileage with those. More-so once you factor in the cost.

Yes - both SCT & Superchips offer tuning for these truck. But again, you wont gain any major increase in fuel mileage with those. Plus, you are looking between $250-$400 just for the tuner (if you buy new).

Long story short - The juice isn't worth the squeeze for the small MPG increase.

The truck itself (w/ it's combination of features) is really your limiting factor.

what about running 33's, or to have the gearing to be able to pull heavier loads and not drop significantly?
