Unhappy 4x4 low does not engage

i have a 2001 ford ranger XLT, w/ eletronic shift on the fly 4x4, when i engage 4x4 high it works fine but when i try to engage 4x4 low nothing happens, no light or anything (4x4 low bulb works too, it flashes on startup). I am following the manual by coming to a complete stop and putting the auto tranny in Neutral too. I was wondering if anybody knows anything? thanks

Ok, first thing i would do is rip that sucker out and put in a manual xfer case. They hold up better. Other than that, no idea :lol

Your foot is down on the brake when you flip the switch? Sorry, I'm not trying to insult your intelligence. Probably the crappy shift motor. I want to swap a manual case in mine too!

ya my foot is down on the brake, well today i tested it out in my friends gravel driveway i came to a complete stop and in 2wd i took off pretty fast (spun rear tires), then i came to a stop and took off in 4x4 high (4x4 High light came on) and it was slower and no tire spin with the same amount throttle, then i engaged 4x4 low (no light) and took off with the same amount of throttle again and it felt like it was engaged so i think it is just something to do with the light and not with the transfer case

There's a huge difference in gearing between 4 Hi/4Low. You know when you're in 4 low.

if the light is not on it's not engaged. if the light was burned out it would not come on when turning the ignition on then go back out.

You have to be stopped brake applied and shift into neutral to switch from 4h to 4low, other wise it will stay in 4 high and not switch do to the safety features.

If you have a manual you must either be in neutral or the clutch must be engaged while at a complete stop with the brake applied.

when shifting into 4 high from 2wd as long as you aren't going over 45 mph / 72 kmh you will be fine.

oh one last note 4h to 2wd can be done at any speed but 4l to 4h same as getting into low complete stop yadda yadda

Aaron, look at the original date of the thread. 28 months ago.
you really don't need to post a reply if the previous reply was more than 30 days ago.
