Default O/d off light, hard shift to second and metal shavings........

Hate to start a new thread about this but I can't find anything that is similar to what I've got going on.. Last Sunday I got in my truck and as soon as I started it my o/d light started flashing. So I decided to drive until everything warmed up to see if that had any effect. When I pulled out of my driveway it shifted hard from 1st to 2nd. Also noticed that my idle was lower than normal. So I stopped in town and checked tranny fluid. Levels were good and color was good but I had a pretty substantial amount of shavings. When I got home and Parked it I held the o/d button down and the light went off but as soon as I put it in gear it came right back on. I appreciate any help guys I have a bad feeling ill be changing the tranny.. Again. But thought maybe there was something I could do before diving right into that.

If there's metal shavings in your ATF, you're not gonna like what we have to say.

That's what I was afraid of.

Time to start prepping for a manual swap or start looking around for a replacement tranny for when yours blows.

And to make yours last longer do a fluid change, might not buy much time tho

Sad thing is I just put this one in about 8 months ago used obviously and put amsoil in it. The only thing I'm confused about I guess is that there were no prior symptoms no hard shifting or light blinking at speed or anything I just got in it one day and it was toast.

You could always try dropping the pan, changing the filter and adding new fluid. It's your gamble on the 50 bucks +/- of materials.

Are you going to put that stuff in your next tranny or are you going to use Mercon V which is what the tranny is speced for?

Automatics LOVE to do that. One day you're driving along fine and the next day, a big fat fuck you.

Next time use the factory recommended fluid and maybe it won't burn up so quickly.

Or better yet, just sell the pos and buy something reliable.

The OD light blinking means you have a tranny code. See what it is. The metal in the fluid is not good but may not be the cause of your problem. The metal will be filtered out so it should not circulate. I agree with removing all your fluid and replacing with Mercon V along with a new filter. I'm not sure what year transmission you are dealing with but if you find gasket material in the pan, a blown gasket in the valve body could be the problem. The late 90s and early 2000s had this problem.

When you replaced the transmission 8 months ago....did you replace the torque converter or flush the transmission cooler? If your last transmission grenaded itself and you didn't flush the cooler. Well....there ya go.
