If it's a manual I would put my money on a Broken shift fork. I Broke one once doing a burnout. Started in first, shifted hard into second then when I tried to go back to first, there was nothing. Managed to find 4th and 5th gears and with a lot of clutch slipping got it home. I found a guy to fix it for $400. It only took him 2 days to remove the tranny tear down and fix it, and reinstall it. He said they are a weak link in the tranny.
