2007 Ranger FX4, 4wd question and vibration question.
It's been a while, I got rid of my 98 ranger, it had manual locking hubs in it so I really didn't care to educate myself on the workings of the auto 4wd crap.. Now, I have a 2007, and I decided to test my 4wd the other day since winter is coming and now would be the est time to find a problem. Anyway, put it in 4hi, engaged like it should, felt good, but, two things were odd, 1. when I went to turn, it was tight, like in 4lo.. my old one while in hi was able to pull into my parking spot with out any major issue, this one, not so much, not sure if it was because it wasn't snow and just wet or not. but it felt like it was in lo. HOw can I make sure everything is engaging 4hi,4lo respectively? Also, I get a bad vibration at 80 from the drive train.. feels like the shaft, re-balance? or just replace?
Edit. I forgot the one question I need to ask.. lol! can I put manual locking hubs in my 2007? if not, why? and if so, do I need ot change the wheels?

I know with the live axle set up the Cvs are splined into the hubs, basically everything up front is spinning in 2hi but there is no torque since the transfer case isnt engaged, and you can put manual hubs up front but its about $400 because you need vacuum hubs and CVs from a 2000 as well as the locking hubs.

Don't use 4x4 on dry pavement. That feeling you had was the drivetrain binding.

Could have a a locker in the front, lockers always make it harder to steer. Yes there is a hub conversion kit.

They never came stock with a locker in the front or rear. Only a limited slip in the rear axle. The only 2 "lockers" for the front j know of are the torsen and the powertrax.

That weird that I have a factory locker in my front axle of my 98 4x4. Then why would they only use front lockers in explores? Or the bronco 2?

From my understanding the only type of limited slip/locker that ford has ever put in the front end of a truck like vehicle is the raptor. And it's a torsen limited slip. Your truck has an open front differential.

Then explain the locker noise that matches the locker noise from my dad's jeep? Can you explain how they handle the same as well? The raptors innovation was the e-lockers front and rear.

Then it's aftermarket.
No Ranger came from the factory with a front locker/lsd.

No factory, the previous owner barley took care of it. From playing in the dirt I know it spins all 4 tire. Then why would ford only put lockers in explorers? The same frames underpin both trucks?

no it's not factory. No ranger came with a front diff other than open.
Frames aren't the same either

Trust us - There are only two options at this point:
1. An aftermarket front locker was installed by a previous owner.
2. No front locker is present.
Also, I'm a bit "rusty" when it comes to Explorers - but I didn't think they had a factory front locker either. I know I've seen my fair share of aftermarket front locker install threads over the years on the Explorer Forum....
I could be wrong when it comes to Explorers - but I'm confident when it comes to Rangers and their lack of a factory front lsd/locker.
