Arrow What size u-joints do I need 2001 2.3L

I believe my u-joint is going bad on my truck (2001 2.3L). As I reverse I hear a squeak that rises as speed goes up... put it in neutral while going backwards down my driveway and the noise instantly disappears. Put it in reverse and the noise comes back.

My main question is what size U-joint do I need? I was on rock auto and they have a TON, which quite frankly I have no clue which ones to get...

Does the driveshaft use two (front and rear?)

I have taken the driveshaft off before when doing a front trans seal and rear out put shaft seal on the diff, so I have no problem taking the thing off... just don't know anything about u-joints.

Thanks much,
-Nigel

Good test is to lay under the truck, and push up on the driveshaft right next to the joint. There's 2 joints on the driveshaft.

No movement = good U-joint

Have some slight movement.

Now I just need to know what u-joint to get? Anyone know of a part number or size I am looking for? Rockauto has at least 20... :-(

Thanks,
-Nigel

I would give the dealership a call. They can look it up for you, but you don't necessarily have to buy it from them.

Ordered the 1310's because I was told that is what 2.3L rangers RWD use. You can see from the pictures it is too small.

I have a 2001 XLT 2.3L rwd, with 4:10 gears... perhaps that's why I have bigger u-joints.

Anyways I ordered new 1330 u-joints and will have them here Saturday.

I'll post more info/update on Saturday... Figured this might help someone who is looking to figure out what they need.

Picture for reference:

See attached pictures of mine vs new.

I had a rear squeak when reversing.... I can almost say without a doubt this is why... look at the one u-joint... ZERO grease in and lots of rust and powder.

New fittings get here Saturday, will update once pressed in.

Welp new 1330's came in over the weekend and I pressed them into the drive shaft. No issues with that using the Advance Auto ball joint press. That actually worked out really well. I did have to use my impact on it to get them pressed out, but putting the new ones in went fine with the press and a 1/2 ratchet.

No more squeak when reversing. I guess had I let it go any longer it would have grenaded u-joints. After taking the caps off all the old u-joints I saw that most even though they had little dirty grease in them were all worn and had roller marks from the bearings. These new ones are spicer OEM, and greasable. Should last a long time!

Not sure why mine used 1330 u-joints but incase anyone finds this thread, hope it helps them in sourcing what they need.

Thanks,
-Nigel
