Default Auto to Maunal

Hey FRF,
I've always wanted to swap my Ranger from automatic to manual. I have a 1986 2 wheel drive with the 2.3l motor. This weekend at one of my local junkyards theyre doing a sale which is half off EVERYTHING. So I want to use this weekend to my advantage! I know most of the main parts. I just want to know if there are any tricky jumps along the way and I have no clue about if the tranny needs any electrical components, its own computer ect. So any help/advice is GREATLY appreciated! Thank you very much! And to make it a little interesting I'll give you guys a picture of the truck hah

And yes I know I forgot to put the mirror back on for the picture (Freshly painted when picture was taken)

Your truck is incredibly old, so I doubt the computer is gonna have anything to do with your transmission. You can probably just get away with the pedal assembly, transmission, floor plate, and shifter. You may also need a new driveshaft if your automatic is longer or shorter than the manual transmissions and your current driveshaft has the wrong spline count or doesn't have a slip joint in the shaft itself.

As for wiring, most you'll have to do is cut the reverse light wires off of the neutral safety switch or range selector on the side of the automatic, and then splice them to the reverse light switch plug if your manual transmission has one.

The transmission will have to come from another 2.3 truck since the bell housing bolt patterns aren't the same between motors.

The factory manual transmission that would have come in your truck was the Toyo Koygo. IIRC, there was a 4-speed and a 5-speed option. Around 1988 Ford started using the Mazda M5OD. That might work as well, but I'm not sure if the speedometer cable is any different on the 2nd gen Rangers.
