Well my Ranger got back from the shop and apparently the fuel-pump fuse was missing and the old distributor just needed to be cleaned since the new one I bought was the broken one. Thanks a lot RockAuto.

Well now the transmission is acting up such as not getting into gear no matter what I'm doing. I drive mainly on paved roads and don't go off-road much or doing anything drastic while off-road. Plus the fluid is darker than normal.

I just need advice if it's even worth rebuilding, replacing or just selling the truck. I just wouldn't get much for it as it is and was hoping the AT would be more cost effective to rebuild or replace rather than selling the truck for I'm guessing a measly $1000.

What are the signs that an auto transmission is just not worth rebuilding and just replacing entirely?

If you like the truck and are up to the challenge rebuild the tranny, first see what a fluid and filter change does.

Well I didn't change the fluid or filter, but I pumped out at least a gallon of black fluid. Shouldn't be that black for all I know so something is burning up. Put fresh fluid in with some transmission conditioner and it's actually shifting now. If it's burning itself up is it a cooling issue or something internal? Never worked on a transmission before but I'm technical enough to figure it out. May wind up having to rebuild it myself.

I would highly recommend you go get a bottle of seafoams transmission repair. I can personally vouch that that stuff is amazing

Thanks and sorry for the delayed response. Seafoam brand is great and all, but I'm going to rebuild the transmission anyway. Never rebuilt a transmission before. Will getting a master rebuild kit be enough? I probably won't know the extent of the issue until I have it all taken apart. Problem is I want to get all the parts I need and pull it out Saturday morning and then put together and back in Sunday evening because I can't let my only means of getting to work be sitting for weeks as I'm waiting for more parts. Maybe I could order the parts I anticipate may need replacing?

goodluck. pulling the trans, rebuilding it, and reinstalling in a weekend seems unrealistic IMO.

Just make sure you really pay attention to how the snap go when pulling everything apart.

I would say since you have never done it I would think a weekend is not going to be enough time. I would recommend before you pull it drop the pan. there are magnets in the pan to get metal out of your fluid. if they have a little grit on them no worries if you find shavings or large pieces... game over for the home gamer at least

Another forum member suggested I just get another transmission and build off of that, which is what I'll probably do. I'll do a complete fluid change and check the pan for metal, which I doubt there'll be anything major since the transmission doesn't knock or grind. The magnet on my pan is on the outside for some reason. Owner before me must have added a magnet to it.

Drop the pan, change the filter and see what's in the pan. Filter and pan gasket are like $20. Believe you will loose 2-3 qts of tranny fluid.
