Default clutch not engaging properly

Hi, newbie here.
I just bought a 95 ranger xlt 5 spd and the clutch is having problems engaging to change gears. I checked the fluid level and it was empty. I filled it back up and it helped a little but not much. the fluid turned black after a short dirve. to get it into first I usually have to pump the clutch pedal several times and then it will go into first if you push it hard. The only way I can get it into reverse is to turn the truck off, then change gear and then turn it back on.

Do I have a bad master/slave cylinder or does the whole clutch need replacing?

thanks for any help.

More than likely your hydralic system for your throwout bearing is shot, best case senario, fluid and bleeding will fix it. Don't know exactly what set up is in your truck but likely with a truck that old it just might be time to pull your tranny and do your clutch, pressure plate, throwout bearing and check or service your master cylinder.

I am going to be replacing all those items on my 4.0. What is the best source to check for bleeding procedure. Anyplace on here where it is discussed?

Do a thread search on the drivetrain forum. If I was more tech savy I'd just post a link. Ask one of the moderators and they can point you the right way for an effective search.
