My friends Sport Trac did the exact same thing. We were coming home from camping and her truck wouldn't engage into reverse. She was burning up the fluid and doing what you described. Hers was much worse though.
It was giving the following codes:
-Incorrect gear 3 ratio
-incorrect gear 4 ratio
-incorrect gear 5 ratio
As well as a couple others.
She drove to work for the next few weeks in 2, not OD (damn women) and I told her she could reset the computer and flush the tranny fluid, maybe the gears will engage properly. So we unhooked the battery and let it sit overnight, still did it. After about a week she tried again in Drive and her truck drives perfectly.
I really though she had broken internal pieces but I guess not. Try scanning for any trouble codes.
