Default rear axel rotates when accelerating

Hey folks,

I bought my wife a 98 Ranger 5 months ago, it is an auto with 90k miles. I drove it to work one day last week and noticed a jerk when taking off. It didnít start this until a few weeks ago. Now she tells me.

I put it on jack stands, hold the brake and give it gas, maybe ľ throttle, the front of the differential rotates up about ĺ of and inch. Let off the brake and it falls back down.
When driving, I can feel the jerk when taking off, as long as there is force on the drive train the position doesnít change. Once at a stop can feel the rotation back to an idle/no load position.

I canít figure out what the heck is going on. All u-bolts, shackle bolts, shock and sway bar bolts have the proper torque. Donít see any broken welds or springs.

Noticed the driverís side wheel didnít spin as freely as the other side. Found the emergency brake cable was sticking. Replaced the cable and did a brake job. Also replaced the u-joints.

Any ideas/suggestions?

Your help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks.

With a leaf spring located rear axle like most pickups have, it is normal behavior for the axle to rotate or "wrap" under accel or braking. The bump you feel is the driveshaft slip yoke sticking and then suddenly moving as the driveshaft length changes. You can regrease the slip yoke for a more or less temporary fix. A more permanent but more costly fix is to install traction bars to limit the axle wrap.

Wow, never even thought of that, I'm stupid. Why didn't I ask you guys sooner?

Don't think the wife needs traction bars, yet.

Thanks for help Bob, much appreciated.
