Exclamation noise in fx4 rear end

ok i have a 2002 4.0 fx4 ranger and its got about 50k miles with just a few mud hole trips but never stuck or deep mud. its making a knocking noise when you let off the gas and its coming from the rear. the universals are in great shape. the front seal in the rear end was messed up but i caught it in time cuz there was hardly any loss of oil. i installed a new seal and flushed out the old gear oil. it was nasty and kinda brownish. i put 75w140 senthetic with 4oz of friction modifier back in it and took a test drive. it still made the noise and now it makes it if you accelerate quikly also. i dont know what to do. there were no metal shavings in the rear end as far as i could tell. (i felt thru the fill plug. the knocking has got louder. and by the way i really dont think this has anything to do with it but the 4wd light in the dash is on and its out of 4wd for sure but the light stays on. it just started staying lit up a little bit before i started hearing the noise. but it has stayed on a day or so in the past after havin it in 4wd. im dumb founded. i thought maybe its the tranfer case but im pretty sure the noise is in the back. plz help me cuz its my only vehicle right now and im stuck until its fixed.

Ford recalled the geared Torsen limited slip differential on the early 2002 model year manual FX4's because they were fragging in the field. Because no problems were reported with automatic trucks, the recall did not include them. IMO, this was rather stupid since the axles were the same regardless of transmission type (???).

If your truck has the manual transmission and t-case, the axle should have been replaced already at Ford's expense. Rumor has it that the replacement axles had a purple tag on the diff for identification. IIRC, the cutoff date for the recall was for trucks built before sometime in January, 2002. You can check the build date of your truck on the Certification Label in the door jamb.

If you have an automatic, you have no recourse through the recall.

Check with a dealer to see if there are time limitations on the recall - sometimes there are no limits, especially if the recall is due to a safety concern.

Having the 4x4 light stick on the manual trucks is a common problem caused by a sticking switch on the t-case. Automatics get the signal for the dash lights from the 4WD Control Module.
