Default overdrive problems

I have a 01 4.0 auto transmission and the over drive has gone out . When it's in od the rpms constantly jump up about 500 rpm and then will drop back down and will shift hard going into 2nd so I'm having to drive without it. any idea what could cause it?

Whatever you're doing, stop doing it. The only time you need to drive your truck when the tranny is freaking out is to a tranny shop at 25 mph. You'll destroy the whole thing, like throwing a rock into a jet turbine. Then a $160 fluid flush quickly jumps to a $2800 rebuild..

First step is flush the fluid and change the filter. Firestone did mine for $225. You gotta do something quick or that tranny is gone.

WisconsinMicko here-I have a 2000 with the 3.0 and auto overdrive. The O/D has begun dropping off after about 20 miles highway and beginning city driving again. Fluid does not smell burnt. Is there an electrical switch, other than the one on the shift lever that might be the cause? Help is appreciated. Thank you.

X2!

Drop the pan, change filter, and refill it.
