I'll bet money it's starving for fluid. If it does not have enough, the gears will not engage. I watched it happen several times on mine. The bigger concern here is why it would be low. The transmission does not consume fluid, and Ford claims that, "under normal circumstances" (whatever that means), it's filled for life. There might be a leak. See if you can find any bleeding parts around there. Eyeball your coolant too. The external oil cooler is a fantastic leak point.
While you have that dipstick out, check it for clues. If that fluid is any color other than blood red, or there's a lingering burning smell, you have an internal failure.
