Default 2x4 valve body different then 4x4

I want to replace the valve body on my 99 4x4 with the 4r44e trans. I can get a deal on one that came out of a 99 2x4 with the 4r44e trans. Does anyone know if they are different?.

Hopefully a trans expert can chime in here, but I'm gonna go ahead and say no. As far as I know, the 4R and 5R both use the same valve body, regardless of 4x4 or 4x2. The only differences are the filter and oil pan shape, output shaft length, and extension housing that mounts to a transfer case. You should even be able to put a 5R 4x2 valve body in a 4R 4x4 without any trouble.

Sure, you can use a 2wd in a 4x4. Just be sure to use the right filter.

So is there a difference in between the filter on a 4r44e 2x4 vs 4x4?. Or do you mean if I use the 5r valve body?

The 4x2 trucks use a different filter and transmission pan than the 4x2 trucks. The filters look identical, except the 4x4 filter has a neck on it that the 4x2 filter doesn't.

I see, thank you for the explanation. So as long as I use the 4x4 filter on it. It should be fine.
