auto to manual
Thinking about my automatic 2001 4.0 4x4 and making it a manual. Anyone got any tips?

Re: auto to manual
Don't. Not worth having to track down all the parts, and not worth the headache of trying to work around the PATS system.
It's doable, but you need to really do your research before you actually do it.

Re: auto to manual
Run that automatic to the grave before you even consider the swap. When it works, it's a perfectly good transmission on its own. Swapping to anything else is an enormous time/money vampire and just not worth it unless you have a need in the first place.

Re: auto to manual
I agree with these guys. I thought about doing it myself. But decided that it would be easier to just trade it for one with a manual trans then to try to swap them.

Re: auto to manual
Thanks for the advice. This is my second auto. Transmission in the truck. It's not my daily driver and I've already took out the I.F.S. and put a dana 30 under it. I'll probably end up doing it sometime. Just wanted to see what everyone thought. Thanks for the tips.

In that case, do it. If it's your toy and you can spend the time, round up the parts needed and convert it.

Re: auto to manual
Yeah pretty much what I'm thinking JJSLAIL22. I have never dug into a tranny swap before. Not sure really where to start.

The first step is getting your hands on the actual transmission. From there, it's just figuring out what additional pieces need to be added that the stock automatic setup won't have. A shifter, clutch, flywheel, etc.. There are a few people on this forum who have done the swap before, so try searching around for the threads on it. The biggest hurdle you'll face is software though. As mentioned above, PATS makes auto-manual swaps really complicated. It doesn't help that the PCM is also the transmission computer for the automatic (remember, the 4R/5R are 100% computer-controlled).

Ive done mine and it is my daily driver. I have a 00 xlt, had traded to a 96 explorer several years ago wanting wanting parts to her explorer I took everything I could.
The biggest thing I was worried about was the brake/clutch pedals. I dont know if the year you have is the same. After that if you go with same motor/transmission are the same as what you have, confirm that transfer case bolt the same.
The pcm will still run the motor, but the check engine light will be on code from auto transmission. Be aware that some years even on the 4.0 the flywheel is a 6 bolt and others are 8 bolt. I found my clutch kit on ebay for 1/2 the price of local auto store.
The cable shifter to auto trans will disconnect from steering column, it has to come out for your clutch line.
Hope it helps

Re: auto to manual
Took me. What 3-4 days to track down all the parts needed and had the truck up and runnin in what 2-3 days. It's not that complicated if you actually know how to wrench, it's fairly simple. And it was cheaper then rebuilding my auto trans. So. Do it and good luck. Love how the negative comments come from people that haven't done it.

Re: auto to manual
Where as it's the best thing I ever did to my truck and would do it again in a second.

I agree, it was the best thing I ever did to my truck.
But I doubt I'll ever do it again because I refuse to buy an automatic Ranger.

Re: auto to manual
Yea I'm definitely doing it. I found a wrecked truck close to my house. The guy said I can have everything I need for 250 bucks. It is definitely going to be worth it. Thanks for the positive feedback.

Re: auto to manual
What are you going to do for the PATS system? Keep the automatic computer and rig up the wiring? What about the 3K rev limiter?
