Default Transmission Help

I have a 2000 3.0 with a 5 speed manual transmission. When I try to shift between gears sometimes it groans, not a grind, and won't let me have the gear until the engine idles down. It is usually between 1-2 and 2-3, and doesn't always do it. I am planning on doing the clutch and slave cylinder/release bearing soon. Anyone have ideas?

It could be anything from bad syncros to bad slave. Is it hard to get in gear at idle?

Then I'm suspecting syncros. Usually, when it's heard to get into gear from a stand still is when the slave is fubar. That or the system needs to be bled.

Have you ever changed the fluid? Seeing if there are more metal shavings than normal will also help.

I haven't changed the fluid as this transmission hasn't been in all that long. It was pulled out of a junkyard to replace one that was abused by the previous owner. What would be more metal shavings than usual?

Pulling junkyard transmissions are a tricky deal. You never know what state they are in. Normal shavings would just be a lightly coated magnet on the plug. If you drain it and you see big chunks or big shavings stuck to the magnet, not hair size shavings, then you can safely assume.or if the fluid is also holding a lot of shaving pieces. If you know for a fact that the fluid is good you can always take apart the shifter assemble and take the top plate off and give it a visual inspection through the shift rail.

Yeah I knew it was a gamble when I got it, but it has been great to me for about 4 or 5 years so no complaints for how much I paid. Next time I get a chance I'll have to check the fluid.

Ok so update on this thread.

I have started to replace the clutch and have the transmission out of the truck with a new slave cylinder in. But the old pilot bearing had disintegrated and is stuck in the end of the crankshaft. I didn't put a whole lot of effort into getting it out yet short of a little prying, but I sprayed it with some penetrating oil before I came in. Just looking for some suggestions on how to get the remainder of the pilot bearing out.

Use bread. I've seen people stick bread into the hole and hit it with a hammer, and the pilot bearing pops out.

It is supposed to work with wheel bearing grease too.

Yeah I tried the grease trick, but didn't work for me. Ended up getting a bearing pulled and pulled it right out. I'll get the whole thing put back together over the next week or so.
