Don't know what caused it, but that must have made quite a racket.

Been there, done that but in vehicles with far more ponies than a Ranger. One way to do it is to throw a bunch of torque at the rear end, the posi locks or tries to or begins to lock and when this happens you're either going around a corner or one tire spins a bit and then grabs (ice, etc etc), either way the carrier sees the same result. Then your tires just so happen to have a lot of traction and the torque difference between the left/right tires causes the spyder(s) to break rather than the tire(s) to spin and it so happens that the clutch in the posi axle also did not slip. Yes, I do know how to do this.
*Edit: I know people will say that the gear lube has the friction modifier already in it, and you may well read that on the bottle, but IMO, unless I can actually find proof that whatever is in it equivalent to what the manufacturer spec is, I'd add the real McCoy rather than just assume.

Well could of possibly been from ice. Had a incident a week or so ago on the highway. As for the modifier i always add it. Dont feel right running without it.
