Default Auto tranny = garbage

Has anyone else had transmission problems? My first 98 ranger destroyed its own tranny, and now my 06 just lost its reverse band. I had an 04 standard tranny and that thing was mint. Just frustrating is all. I just want to know if this is truly a common problem otherwise I think I'm never buying a ranger again and going to the dodge side.

How many miles on each? From what I've read on a few forums it's not uncommon to see one crap out at 80k or see one go 200k.

Mines 200,000 and shifts a bit hard sometimes but otherwise still good!

150,000 miles is the average life span and if you beat the crap out of it or fail to maintain it....less.
Would you like some cheese with your whine?
Good luck on the Dodge side, you'll need it.

Mine crapped out at 78,000 miles, and that's with transmission fluid and filter changes every 6,000 miles. lol.

BUT, my old '00 Ranger had 189,000 on the original transmission, and the previous owner pulled horse trailers around her farm with it. It had just started to slip before I wrecked it.

It really depends on the transmission. Some last forever, some can't even make it to 100,000 miles.

With that being said, I'm glad I swapped my truck to a manual transmission.

Mine crapped out at 200k. Rebuilt it myself. Wasn't hard.

Yea sure buy a dodge, that'll fix your transmission issues.

----------

My 99 had 183k on its original trans and it shifted perfect everytime.
My current truck has 146k and still going strong.

I thought that was funny too. Let's pick the brand of trucks that has the worst track record for transmissions. Lol

Let me restate this. I didn't back off the overdrive band adjustment and the coast clutch discs friction welded together. So it probably could have gone another 25/50k miles

I guess my sarcasm with the dodge comment wasn't obvious enough haha. Ya if and when i get another ranger it will most definitely be standard.

My Tanger has the Mazda m5OD manual, and it works. It leaks. The shifter has too much play. Itll sometimes pop itself out of 3rd gear. But no noises, it works. 305,000 miles, all original. My 03 Explorer has the 5-speed auto, i believe the Rangers had the sane tranny. 55REw i think. It works okay at 105,000. It usually shifts real well, but every now and then, when im on the gas, it might shift a little slow or hard. Ill drop the pan soon. Now we used to have a 1999 windstar, and from new, had major tranns problems. So much so the dealer stopped charging us the deductable.

4.0 Rangers had the 5R55E
3.0 and 4 cyl had the 4R44E

5 before means 5 speed and 55 means heavy duty
so 4 is 4 speed and 44 is light duty

Only difference in speeds is the 5r55e's computer actuated the overdrive band while in 1st to give the 2nd gear. 3rd 4th and 5th are the same as the 4R44E 2,3,4.

The 4R44E had less clutch discs and steels (about one less per pack). The 4r44e had 4 pinions on front and rear where the 5r55e had 6. Also the 5r55e had a speed sensor at the output shaft.

The Explorer used the 5R55E, but eventually switched to the 5R55W (and possibly the S and N, but I don't remember). The Ranger kept the 5R55E through its life. But the model in one year does not equal the one from another. Ford kept changing things over the years, and slowly began to fix its frequent issues. For example, the valve body gasket was the most notorious failure point of the 4R/5R for the longest time. In '03, Ford switched to a gasket design that was bonded to the separator plate, which eliminated the problem forever.

Follow through the years afterward, and they changed that and altered this, sometimes fixing common issues while accidentally introducing others. It does seem like they sorted it out at the end though. Ford's complete set of valve body fixes seem to completely replace the aftermarket kits that used to be so popular.

Also, I think the '06 and '07 models had an issue related to reverse, but I don't have access to that TSB. It seems awfully impressive that the band blew though. That's easily one of the strongest things in that transmission…
