The 4R44E had less clutch discs and steels (about one less per pack). The 4r44e had 4 pinions on front and rear where the 5r55e had 6. Also the 5r55e had a speed sensor at the output shaft.
My 3.0 has the 5R44E.

The 5R44E is just a 5R55E with 4-pinion gears and fewer clutches. They're mechanically (and I'm pretty sure electronically) identical otherwise. It's still four-speed + overdrive + reverse. The 4R is three-speed + OD + R.

My '99 had 232k on the original transmission no problems. My 04 had 135k no trans problems. Fluid and filter change every 30k, on both Merc V.

Sorry, I'm referring to the 4R/5R naming. The 2.3 and 3.0 have a 5R44E, not 4R44E. While I do appreciate Ford making a naming scheme that makes sense, they are all waaaaay to similar and easy to mix up.

They are called 5 speed overdrive and 4 speed overdrive.

in later years they do. But in the mid-late 90s they had 4r44e.

My '06 had 161k and all it had was a dead switch on 3rd gear which randomly disabled o/d and stalled the engine sometimes. In my '02, I have gaps in the gears and at 75 mph exactly the gears disengage then catch causing me to momentarily lose control every time (I no longer go on highways) oh, and that one is at 169k but was rebuilt at 60k

amazing how things last when you actually service them according to the manufacturers recommendations isn't it? reminds me I need to do mine when it warms up out
