Re: Valve body gasket issues. What symptoms to look for
Sorry to just jump right in an hogg this post but I'm having the same sounding issue. But mine is an 02 3.0 4x4 automatic an it only hesitates an kinda shifts hard from 1st into 2nd. One time OD light but shut truck down and restarted and has not been on ever since. My question is could that be the same issue with mine. Any help to point t me in the right direction is much appreciated. Thanks again an again I apologize for jumping in on this post

It could be. Do you know when the trans was serviced last?. What does the fluid look and smell like?.
Have you had the codes read to see what the stored code was from the trans?.

Re: Valve body gasket issues. What symptoms to look for
I just changed fluid/filter last week for the 2nd time and both times was pretty dirty but didn't smell burnt. I have not flush converter or cooler lines. Only dropped the pan. Is a full flush needed.

Nice! Tasca says it fits on a 2001+ Ranger. Any idea whether it would also fit a 1997 with 5R55E valve body?

My local Ford dealer actually found two different part numbers claiming to be the bonded separator plate, and the number I listed was the one I went with. But I don't remember what the other one was, or I why I chose this one over it. Possibly, one of them was a TSB part for older units (2002 and earlier), and the other was just a replacement for the newer ones when they started installing them at the factory (2003 and up). They should be totally interchangeable though. As far as I know, all 4R and 5R units use the exact same valve body, and all are drop-in compatible with each other. Newer ones just have different tweaks and fixes added in over the years.
Look into other valve body mods that you can implement as well. Ford made a lot of minor changes, and I think the separator plate might have been tweaked a bit to account for one of them. Specifically one of the many alterations to the EPC circuit.

I'd like to jump in for a second.. Do you think a blown VB gasket would cause a shift from 1 to 2, but not into 3? And when it tries to shift to 3 it just revs up to 6k. I have a friend who's having this issue with the 5r55e I believe. With the blinking OD light of death.

It depends on the year. Anything 2003 and newer will have the bonded separator plate installed from the factory. 2002 and older will have the gasket-plate sandwich design with assembly lube or petroleum jelly in place of mayo (yum yum?). The corners around the reverse servo have the biggest reputation for blowing out, but there are other places near the solenoid farm that have been notorious to go out as well. There's no real way to know for sure until you drop the valve body and see for yourself.
But at the end, that sounds like it's having a really hard time building up the pressure to go through with the shift. A blown valve body gasket is definitely a repeat offender for that crime.

That's what I was thinking. Cause when it started to act up, we were at a mud hole in the mountains, and reverse wouldn't work at all until you floored it. Then we added a couple bottles of Mercon and it was working a bit better yet overfilled.. It was the only way to get home. Then it was going into reverse just fine and it would not go into 3rd. We drove it down the highway a bit and it would Rev up high in second gear and not go into 3rd unless you keep the RPMs at 3k, it would feel as if 2nd isn't "catching" and it will just Rev up. So I'm thinking it could be a solenoid, a valve body clog, VB gasket blown, or all of the above.
Edit: also it is a 2001 Explorer sport trac. 4.0 SOHC with the 5R55E

Re: Valve body gasket issues. What symptoms to look for
I'm new to this forum. My problem the 2001 XLT extended cab 5r44e wouldn't shift correctly between 1-2. OD light would flash after a late rough shift to second. I replaced the Valve body gasket. It needed it, it was blown out. Dealer didn't have bonded used new original type gaskets. Put back together. Drove it for 5 or 6 miles all shifted great let daughter have it back. three days later she was complaining it is doing the same thing. At the time I had it apart I did not check any shift solenoids (Was intimidated to remove them) Daughter has truck for school can't make time to go to tranny shop to check codes. I'll get them friday 16th.

I got the codes read today. Only had one for the Trans. It is PO 733. I think it s the #3 shift solenoid.
