I just changed the fluid and filter on my 01 Ranger 4.0 4x4 automatic. The manual says 10.3 quarts and the parts store confirmed this. I have put one 32oz bottle of Lucas and 5 quarts and the dip stick is high. I drove it and made sure it was warmed up just like you're supposed to. For the life of me I cannot figure out why the level is high if it is supposed to hold over 10 quarts. I removed the pan and old filter so I would assume that all the fluid came out. Any help would be great because no I have to get some fluid out somehow. Any suggestions on that would be great also.

well you won't get it all out unless you get it flushed from what I remember

Thank you for the answers. It makes sense. Wish I wasn't such a stooge. Any idea on how to get 2 quarts out LOL! Wish they would put that in the manual somewhere. Or better yet the parts store could have said something. Or I could just pull me head out of my butt!

Tranny pan drain plug mod.

1/8" metal drill bit
1/8" pipe tap
1/8" plug.

drill, drain, tap, plug, fill (to correct level)

Well, I got the extra fluid out! Not sure if it was the best way but very effective. Insert small hose (rubber tube), take filter off from shop vac, connect the two and POW! Done.
