M50D-R1 Tran fluid drain and fill.
well im at 120k
I have the lovely M50D-R1 Tran which already has been replaced (Ughh..)
I'd like to drain and refill the damn thing but finding specific information on the tran completely blows.
I know you gotta lift the front end and all that crap and use Mercon ATF. Im just curious as to how to refill the damn thing. Is it thru the shifter?
Sorry, never touched a tran before in my life. But I know that old fluid has to go.
Any help on this would be greatly appreciated.

Refill through the dipstick tube with a funnel. DO NOT OVERFILL!

Um, the M50D doesn't have a dipstick tube.

Get yourself a small hand fluid pump from your local auto parts store. The pump will screw on the top of the MERCRON V bottle and then you will hand pump it up into the fill plug on the driver side of the transmission; there are 2 plugs, the lower one is the drain plug. Fill the transmission until it starts coming out that hole.
Doing it the way I posted above will keep you from over filling the transmission. If you fill it by removing the shifter, you run the risk of overfilling which will cause excess pressure to build up in the transmission causing you to blow the pressure plugs on the shift rail.
The transmission will hold a little over 2 quarts of MERCRON V.

Re: M50D-R1 Tran fluid drain and fill.
mrjonesjr, you are 200% bad ass. Thanks man. That was very good info. Im gonna be doing that refill probably in about a week. Since im going to be doing the brakes this weekend.
I got confused about the dipstick thing aswell, 2 quarts? thats kind of low no? When filling, the truck must be level right? (not on a stand)
That shifter is a piece, if I "were" to take a the shifter off (hypothetically speaking) is anything going to drop into the tranny basically rendering me "FUCKED"?
You should check out my other thread about my Idle throttle issue.

The M50D holds a little over 2 quarts. You will need 3 quarts.
When you fill the truck, it needs to be as level as possible so you have the correct amount of fluid in the transmission.
As long as YOU don't drop anything into the hole, then no.

Re: M50D-R1 Tran fluid drain and fill.
Drained and refilled, Alot of different sources says to use up to 3 or 4 quarts?? Liquid started over flowing a little after 2 quarts, just like you said. Even my father (whos stubborn) tells me thats not enough..
Took it out for a test drive, works wonderfully, shifts smooth, and the transmission is quiet. Feels like new.
The old fluid was black and dirty, its never been changed before.
