4x4 won't engage... Need HELP!
Hi there,
Before I go into what's wrong with my truck. I will give you a little back round on it, it may or may not help. I have a 2000 Mazda b4000 5 speed manual tranny, which has Fords 4.0 and drivetrain, with 125,xxx on it. I have done many modifications to it, ones that relate to the drive train are: 8:8 back axel, oversized tires 31 inch, 1 inch torsion bar lift in the front and manual lockers.
So, now to the problem. A few months ago I was having problems with the 4x4. At the time I had Fords horrible automatic locking hubs on. The truck would transfer into four wheel drive, indicated by the 4x4 light, i would put it into first and easy into gear. A resulting slamming would come from the front and sometimes it would stick sometimes it would not. I replaced the auto lockers with manual ones. Problem solved. It worked beautifully and I spend as much time offroad as i do on road so they got their fair use. About a month ago I was out with some friends and we wanted to go offroading. I got out of my truck. Locked the hubs. Put my truck in reverse. Backed up for 15 feet then engaged the 4x4 on the dash. All went smoothly I eased into 1st and i was off. No problems. I then proceeded up a sharpish incline and i hear a grinding noise which sounds like it is coming from my left front tire and it feels like it is slipping. I was startled but i was having fun so i continued. It got worse. So I stopped and the fun was over. A week later, when i had some free time, I brought my truck to a empty flat strip of road. Proceeded to do the same procedure felt the truck was locked in 4x4 and tried just let the truck ideal in 1st. NO PROBLEMS, I hit the gas and the grinding noise returned. Again sounding like it was the hub spinning. Today I took the hub off. Looks perfect. Had my master mechanic friend over and he looked at it he said " good luck". I'm at a lost guys, my hope is someone can shed some let on this problem of mine before I pay a mechanic to tare into it. I live in northern Minnesota, winter is coming and i depend on my truck and 4x4 greatly. I could use some wisdom!
