Default '97 5-Speed - synthetic oil rather than ATF?

Just picked up my rebuilt transmission (for '97 4x4 M5OD) and the guy suggested using synthetic motor oil rather than ATF since it has brass syncros. Anyone heard of this? Thoughts?

I personally would not run anything thicker than ATF I run RP synchromax in mine to help in the cold as the ATF gets pretty thin and it doesn't like 1st gear with regular ATF but i wouldn't really run anything else in it.

redline makes an ATF fluid thats specifically designed for manual transmissions that call for ATF or auto transmissions that suffer from gear noise because of the design. thats what im going with when its times to do my fluid.

i looked up syncromax and it seems like the same thing as the redline fluid i was talking about.

Use mercon V. Maybe your rebuilder is afraid of some noise. If you don't want to use ATF go get some John Deere low viscosity hydro fluid.

yeah mercon V is just the updated version. my 2011 calls for mercon V but theres not a damn bit of difference between my trans and an older one.

Yep either stick with Mercon V (which has been reported to be slightly thinner) which is why some guys go for the redline/synchromax its closer in viscosity to the original spec. I can vouch that it does help with the ranger growl. Even with my Hurst which amplifies everything in the cab the synchromax is hands down better than the standard Mercon V as far as sound and shift quality.

Good to know! I put in MerconV just to get it drivable. Shifts like a dream, but does have a little more sound (however it could just be that it's wearing in).

THANK YOU ALL FOR YOUR FEEDBACK!
