Go to Perfection Clutch's website. They have videos that show exactly how to bench bleed the system. Keep in mind, however, that there is a reason the reservoir is empty so even if you get it bled successfully it may only last so long until the root cause of the missing fluid is discovered. I just went through this exact scenario. I got the system bled using the bench method. The clutch worked like new for about 3000 miles then the slave blew its guts out so now I am looking at total clutch replacement. If you get the clutch from Napa it will likely be a Perfection clutch which is a good brand. I also recommend the Perfection slave because the housing is billet aluminum while most others are plastic. It's only a few bucks more.

Thanks for the input. I pulled the master cylinder out, bench bled it, and the clutch worked better than when i originally tried to bleed it. Cost me less than 15 for fluid and the clutch tool. Im glad i didnt just say screw it and replace everything. Which is good cause now i need to replace my alternator.
I dont know how 96 managed to do it but i went through a bottle of brake fluid with no luck. Pulling it was a pain but to anyone else with the problem, id suggest bench bleeding before investing in a new clutch

i have been having the same issue. I haven't figured it out yet, the truck hasn't been run for a while but after starting it after putting a motor in, it does exactly this. and I haven't been able to figure it out I replaced everything in it so im trying to not replace the tranny but if necessary I will.
