And other times it requires beating the t-case with a tire iron until it shifts.

Necro posting here, but I had that issue couple years ago and I put her in reverse and coasted about 20'. Then I put it back in drive and stopped, and it was no problem getting it out of 4 low. Apparently if you run in 4 low alot it can get "wound up". I was in constant heavy snow that year with crap tires LOL. Had no real choise.

Working on gathering parts, paint, vynals, and such for the rest of the build LOL. I use this as an everyday truck, but it's also the only truck I have for hunting and general off road fun. Hoping to make it much better than stock!

I've had the same thing happen. Not sure if "getting wound up" is the cause or not but I've found myself having to back up once in a while to get it out of 4wd (even 4hi).

I had a deal a year ago where I took it out of 4l and it just flatlined. I got some grinding noise at some point and couldn't get it to drop into anything. I put it in neutral and got it back into 2. I took it in to get looked at and the dealer found zilch zippo. It never ever did happen again.

On the other hand it responded beautifully this last winter when I hit slick conditions on a nearby winding road which caused my truck to begin going sideways into a ditch with the back end leading. I calmly switched into 4l while still under some momentum and drove out like I was pulling away from a stop sign. So I still view the system as reliable, but I still have allot I'd like to know about it. Mechanically and electrically.

I always hear that it needs to be stopped and put into neutral to go from ____ to ____ but experience says that it isn't necessary.

I think Eddie might be hinting about the idea of the front wheels being loaded differently than the rears. Causing a possible bind at the PTU that needs to be neutralized? So "running 4l allot" could just increase the chances of that situation happening maybe.
