Default Overdrive light blinking

Hi I'm new to this forum just really need some help, I will be as descriptive as I can.
I have a 99 ranger 4.0, 2 wheel drive.
I just bought the truck and when I got on the highway the O/D light will blink and only stop if I shut the car off and turn the car back on. Transmission shifts perfect, until the O/D light comes on. Now it only makes a small thump in first gear with the O/D blinking, then I dropped the transmission pan, changed fluid/filter and the TCC solenoid, drove the truck and it seemed to do better, then once I thought that of course the light starts blinking again, so finally I check the electronic shift fuse and it was blown and replaced it as well with the correct amp. This time the truck drove much longer but soon enough the O/D light came but the fuse is still good. Any suggestions? Code reads p0741 If I remember...

Usually the O/D light blinking means tranny is in limp mode. I'll research the code for you

----------

Transmission fluid temp sensor circuit intermittent.

Thanks man, it doesn't always come on though just when it gets up to tempature, and the tranny doesn't change at all, it just starts blinking then it goes into all the gears like its suppose to but first has a small thump to it.

well then that's reassurance on the code then. Beings it gets up to temp and the code is about a temp sensor.

The code it pulled was torque converter clutch circuit performance or stuck off

hmm...weird. Well do a little research. How handy are you eith a wrench? Depending on where it's located and how hard it is to get to maybe you can replace it yourself. But tranny work I usually leave to mechanics

My truck did the same thing, same code, right after I bought it. I found a way to drive the truck and keep the O/D Off light from coming on. If I didn't drive it that certain way, the O/D Off light would come on. Drove the truck that certain way for 40,000 miles until the transmission blew up. Didn't see the O/D Off light for any of those 40,000 miles except for the few times I tested the truck to see if it would come on.

I never did fix it, I ended up swapping to a manual transmission which was waaaayyyy cheaper than rebuilding the automatic.

If you take the truck to the transmission shop, they're all gonna tell you the same thing. Rebuild. Usually to the tune of $2K.

There are guys here who tried to replace just the TCC solenoid, and others the Valve Body. None of it every works. Most of them end up just having the transmission rebuilt.

I think the code has more to do with faulty wiring, or a bad torque converter than anything else. Every time I changed the trans fluid I would unplug the TCC solenoid connector on my truck and plug it back in. That always seemed to fix the truck for a little while until the connector "shook" loose again.

That's exactly what I was thinking, I might pick up with harness for it and I've tried to find a way for the light to not come on, it's difficult haha how much did it run you for the 5 speed swap?

About $1500, which was $1000 cheaper than what it would have cost to rebuild the automatic.

If it makes any difference for you, the way I used to drive my truck was as soon as the truck got to 45mph, when I felt it kick into overdrive, I would let off the gas and then hit the gas again to kick it out of overdrive. That kept the light off, and kept the transmission from going into limp mode. You have to keep doing it though, and get into a habit of it. I eventually got to the point where I didn't even notice it. For the first few thousand miles after the 5-speed swap, I still did it out of habit. lol.

I'm not sure if that will work for you, but it's worth a shot.
