4r44e shifting issues
I have a 96 ford ranger with a 4r44e in it. I dont remember it having shifting problems when i first got it in 2012, but then again, i only had my learners permit so i didnt drive much. anyways, in oct 2012 i had a shop replace the torque converter seal i believe, and from then till late november i noticed it would take forever to get into first, slip, etc, till i realized their botched job caused it to leak fluid. probably drove like <1000 miles before they fixed it for free, but some of that time it had low fluid. now, as i drove it more, i noticed it would sorta slip on a certain part of my drive home. A couple weeks ago i tried to install an aftermarket transmission cooler, which wouldve been super beneficial except as it turns out, amazon sent me old hose, and it exploded and puked during my test drive. stopped at a gas station <5 minutes from my house, bought a quart of transmission fluid, and quickly limped it home, slipping in and out of gear (yes i realize this was wrong, and yes, i cringe at the thought, but i needed to get back somehow). So now ive filled it up, and run it for a couple hundred miles just fine. it might be a hair overfull, but i really cant tell with the crappy 4r44e dipstick setup. anyhow, its shifting rougher than usual, and slipping a little more often.
btw, fillup took somewhere b/t 3-4 qts (remember it seems to be very full now), so thats about what i lost by the time i got home. had fluid changed along with filter when torque seal was done, about 13k ago
so now, the question is what do i do to reverse this. im not expecting miracles, and i know that at 172k miles, the tranny must be worn out, especially with its hard life, but just something to improve it.
and while im here, it shudders in and out of gear when in reverse uphill. always has. why and can i fix that?
