Front and Rear fluid change? What fluid?
Just purchased a 2004 Ford Ranger 4x4 ext cab with 68,000 miles. I would like to change out the fluids in the front and read end differentials. What should I use for fluid......80-90 Mobil One synthetic?
What is the LS additive I keep hearing about? How do I know if my truck takes that or not?
Thanks
Thanks

Re: Front and Rear fluid change? What fluid?
The friction modifier I bought from Ford, if you have an LS you need it, check the door tag or the axle tag and see what your axle code is, search the forum STL has posted the codes in several threads. I believe you want 85w90, I just bought the fluids to do mine, they are in my truck (unused) I'll check what they are later and post it.

Re: Front and Rear fluid change? What fluid?
I'd use Mobile1 synthetic my self. But Royal Purple would be my next choice.
Don't think you could go wrong with either one.

Only difference really is additives, and that royal purple is a hell of a stouter oil but it's made more for race applications. Mobil 1 is cheaper

Thanks for the quick replies!
My axle code is 97. I take that it is NOT a LS Axle?

You have the open 8.8 4.10. That's the same thing I have.
I am looking into lockers for mine.

You don't need the LS stuff, and a locker makes it so both tires spin together equally, better traction. And open diff spins both tires but if pressed will only put power to one wheel. Hence one wheel burners lol

Gearhead for life, and some people just don't know as much as some of us, not saying anyone is stupid, we are all here to learn, just some of us spend more time doing some of these things than others or we work in industrylol I'd a diesel mechanic by trade. We all bring a different knowledge set and skill to the puzzle.
Good to know you will be around. Any questions I'm always up for answering, and I won't always be right, or know the answer but I can help you out where I can.
