I have a 2006 FX4 with a 5r55e trans, I am looking to install a trans temp gauge and was wondering what the inside diameter (ID) of the hose is. My truck has rubber lines so I would be using barbed fittings. I would like to know what size so I can have all the right parts when I start the project. Or maybe if anyone knows of a NPT fitting I can use on the trans itself.

Too many things to list but the basics are: 4.0L, 4.10 gears, Limited Slip Differential, Automatic Trans
Check me out!
IIRC, You're going to want the input to be in the actual trans pan itself if you want an accurate reading because the fluid will cool down as it runs through the lines. Maybe go to the junkyard and grab an extra pan from a 4x4 Ranger/Explorer with the same transmission and have somebody braze or weld a threaded bung to the pan.
I was hoping to avoid that kind of situation with tapping the trans pan. I know there is not much metal there.
Well if you braze on a threaded bung, it will add a little structural integrity to the hole you drill in the pan. You're not actually tapping the sheet metal of the pan.
Here's a thread that explains trans temp gauges in Explorers. I wouldn't recommend the drain plug kit he used, I've never had luck with garbage like that.
