Default Swapped Clutch. Now super difficult to shift

I just swapped the clutch, pressure plate and slave cylinder on my 04 3.0L ranger. I did not bleed the slave as in the direction it said you did not have to. Everything "seemed" to go smoothly, but now shifting gears is extremely difficult. I have driven it 6 miles since the swap and it has just got worse the farther I went. When the truck is off it shifts into all gears very smoothly. Any ideas guys? Thanks in advance!

That is the issue.

Nah watch the perfection clutch video on how to bleed the ranger worked perfect for me. The no bleed feature only works if you have the valve on the line from the master which some rangers don't and the valves do leak even if you have it if its older. id say you have air trapped somewhere. Bleed it and then tell us what you find.

Thank Goodness! Swapping the clutch was such a pain. I don't think I would have had it in me to go right back into the transmission again lol I'll watch the video and hopefully get to doing it tomorrow evening. I'll let you know how it goes. Thanks for the help

So I bled the slave cylinder today. I must have messed something up because it is much worse than it was before. I am completely unable to shift gears. My only hope is to start the engine with it in gear and when I do that it starts moving forward the moment I turn over the engine. I can only imagine that I messed up and added even more air inside the line. I also accidentally dropped the nipple into the transmission case and I can not get it out. I sure that is not good at all. Needless to say the truck is completely useless and I am very frustrated because I decided to change the clutch it ran fine, I just took this on because it was recommended from a mechanic friend/acquaintance who owns a shop and the clutch was acting up a little. I thought it would be a great learning experience and now I do not have a working vehicle. I think I am just going to pay someone to bleed the slave cylinder the right way.

Yep.

And with that said. You need to get that nipple out or get a replacement. If you have a long handle magnet you might be able to fish it out through the inspection hole.

Then you're going to have to pull the master cylinder assembly to properly bleed it. Too many curves, etc, to do it on the truck.

Good luck.

Truck isn't screwed up, you just didn't properly bleed the system. You have to take the master cylinder, hydraulic line, and reservoir out of the truck and bleed that as an assembly until all the air is out. Then you have to reinstall those three parts into the truck as an assembly. If the clutch still doesn't feel right, then you can bleed any remaining air through the slave cylinder through that bleed line.

But at this point, you sound like you really need your truck, so a shop is probably your best bet.

Yeah, just bleeding it at the slave's bleed valve won't get the air out of the master or the hydrauic line. You need to bench bleed the master, reservior, and line, then reinstall it. Only then will bleeding at the slave do you any good. You may find after you bleed the master assembly that you don't even need to bleed the slave any further.

The problem is that the master sits at a bad angle and can get air trapped, and then the hydraulic line bends around the frame and up into the transmission hump before going back into the slave. Lots of nice air traps there.
