Default rattle noise

Hey guys. The other night I began to notice this rattling noise when i pulled up to a red light. It has been happening every time i come to a complete stop. The funny thing is that if i put the truck in park the noise stops. It happens only when the truck is in gear and i am at a complete stop. I checked to see if anything was rubbing but it was dark out ill check tomorrow morning again but do you guys have any ideas of a possibility? I was thinking maybe the drive shaft was rubbing up on something since when i put the truck in park that would disengage the drive shaft and that is when the noise stops. Any other opinions on where it could be coming from? Thanks

Sorry, I don't have an answer for you but I just wanted to state that I have the same exact problem. I have an 04 FX4. Your right on when you stated that it only happens when the truck is at a complete stop in gear. I'm curious as to what the problem might be. Someone told me once that it's just the heat shields vibrating but that wouldn't explain why it only happens when the truck is in drive, right?

Yeah thats exactly what a guy at my uncles shop told me its the heat shields but if it were heat shields they would vibrate all the time not just when the truck is in gear i would think. My truck is a 96 single cab 4x4. Im gonna throw the truck up on my uncles lift this weekend and see whats making the damn noise cause it bothers the hell out of me lol Ill let you know if i find anything

Sounds like fun, let me know if you figure out what it is because I need to fix it, it's annoying.

So i figured my problem out when i put the truck on a lift. My exhaust pipe was to close to the frame and was knocking against the frame. As soon as I welded a hanger where it was knocking it stopped right away. No more annoying noise!!!

That's engine harmonics for you.
The vibration immediately sets up at different frequencies even when a vehicle is stopped when it's in drive under load, or in park/neutral.
The higher amplitude under engine load can start things really movin, especialy when the engine has a nice even idle.

The same thing was happening to my truck, until I found out, there is a small gap between the hanger and the frame of the truck, which causes the rattling. But im not sure what I can put between the gap?
