I have a 1987 Ranger 2 wheel drive and a automatic transmission. It has the 2.3 liter gas fi engine. I have no clue what auto trans I have as the last Ford I owned was a turd called a 1976 Granada with a streight 6. My question is this should you be able to remove the ignition key after turning the engine off in drive? My crappy 95 Lebaron won't allow you to remove the key until you put the tranny in park. The shifters in both vehicles are floor mounted. I left the trruck two times with it in drive already.

I can pull the key out of the ignition at anytime whether I'm driving or parked in my 94 ranger

Pretty sure that's just a worn out cylinder mechanism failing to secure the key. There's no way I would leave a vehicle in drive and walk away, I just don't see the benefit, especially when you usually need to reverse after parking.
