Default Stuck in 4x4 low, truck dies while driving

I borrowed my brother's 2005 ford ranger 4x4 automatic truck yesterday to haul my snowmobile and trailer up a snowy logging road. The plastic knob on the 4x4 switch is broken, so I used a pair of pliers to switch it to 4x4. I thought I put the truck in 4x4 high, I never put the truck in neutral and I was stopped when I switched to 4x4.
At the end of the day, I started up the truck and the truck was in 4x4. I rolled the truck downhill in neutral while hooking up the tow hitch. I think the truck must have switched into 4x4 low during this process. While I was driving down the logging road, the truck was in 4x4 low, which I thought was weird because I did not put it in 4x4 low intentionally. When I got to the pavement and tried to switch out of 4x4 low, it would not switch and was stuck. I limped down the road in low and while driving down a long hill, the truck completely died, I lost power steering and braking, the oil light and battery light came on on the dash. I put the emergency brake on to stop the truck. After a couple of minutes and a few turns of the key, the truck fired back up.
I drove into the nearest town, about 5 miles, driving about 20 mph and not over 2000 rpm to use a phone to call my brother. Truck is still in 4x4 low. Any ideas what happened? Why did it die? I'm headed out to the truck to try and shift out of 4x4 low while in neutral and with the brake pedal pressed. I'll bring a hammer to tap on the transfer case too to see if that helps. Any other suggestions?

Got the truck to switch out of 4x4 low by pressing the brake pedal and putting it in neutral. Still don't know why the truck died....

I very rarely accelerate when in 4 low and definitely don't go over 5 mph.
