Default How do I disconnect the drive shaft in my Ford Ranger pickup? I need to tow it...

...behind my RV. (Its automatic)? The manual says that the drive shaft must be disconnected if I'm driving a distance greater than 50 miles and driving greater than 35 MPH. Does anyone know how to disconnect it properly for towing? Thanks!

You cannot remove the driveshaft completely or you will loose tranny fluid out of the tail housing.

You will need to use a plug, or if it were me I would just disconnect the d-shaft from the rear axle (by removing the 2 u-joint straps held in place by 2-bolts ea) then securing the d-shaft to the frame rail or crossmember. This will keep the slip yoke in the tranny so no loss of fluid, nor do you need to store the d-shaft because of complete removal.

When you do disconnect, wrap the u-joint bearing caps with some duct-tape, this will keep the caps (and bearings) in place.

Drove a tow truck. Never 'removed' the d-shaft, just disconnect at the axle and tie it up with more than one type of connection (more than one strap or length of tie wire in case one failed)
