Default stuck in 1st, even in reverse!

2002 Ford Ranger 3.0L, 6-cyl, Automatic, 85,000mi

5R55E

I am in a situation here. recently I have had the o/d light flashing and screwing up my shifting from 1st to 2nd. I get rid of it by putting the transmission in neutral on the highway, turning the ignition off, then on, and changing it to drive. Fixes problem for a day or two. Code P0761.

So I do some research, and I decide I want to try to fix this problem. I buy a shift solenoid and a filter w/ new gasket. I drove the truck on two lifts, dropped the transmission pan, replace the filter, and swap out the solenoid for what I thought was the SSC. cleaned the pan, slapped on new gasket, tighten bolts, put truck in neutral (with engine off), rolled truck off lifts, and filled w/ 3.9 Qrt of Mercon V equivalent oil (Valvoline high mileage).

I start up my Ranger, place selector in Drive, and it feels like I'm in Neutral. Give it a little more gas, because we've all seen this before, and slowly gives in 1st. pull out of my driveway on to the road, and it goes, RPM's get up to 4000, and I realize it's not shifting. I drive around on 2000-4000 RPM's to see if the fluid needed to cycle or whatever, nothin. I usually back in to my driveway, so I try, Place gear selector in Reverse, wait a sec, give a little gas, and I'm driving forward! I move the selector in Neutral and try some gas, sure enough, it goes forward! ahhhhh. I pull in my drive way to get it off the road, place selector in Park, give it some gas to see if it would TAC out. NO, It locks in park, but rps won't go above 2000, like its in drive with your foot on the brake.

As if the story wasn't long enough, made short, next day I drop pan, swap out new solenoid for the old one, new fluid (3.9 Quarts) Same problem.

Has anyone seen or heard of this, or do you know why it wont go in neutral or reverse?

You may have already read this, but the Ford manual says: P0760* SSC SSC solenoid circuit failure SSC circuit failed to provide voltage drop across solenoid. Circuit open or shorted or PCM driver failure during on-board diagnostic. Incorrect gear selection depending on condition mode and manual lever position. See Solenoid On/Off Chart. Will flash MIL.

It then directs you to Pinpoint Test A. It says to check all connectors to make sure they are properly seated, then refers you to the diagnostics tables. They pretty much repeat the same problems, so here is the one for no reverse.

Engagement Concern: No Reverse Possible Component Reference/Action
202 ELECTRICAL ROUTINE
No Electrical Concerns

302 HYDRAULIC/MECHANICAL ROUTINE
Fluid
Incorrect level
Adjust fluid to correct level.

Shift Linkage
Cable and bracket damaged, misadjusted, TR misadjusted
Inspect and repair as required. Verify transmission shift cable adjustment; refer to Section 307-05 . Adjust transmission shift cable as necessary. After repairing transmission shift cable, verify the digital transmission range (TR) sensor is correctly adjusted. Adjust the digital TR sensor as necessary.

Incorrect Pressures
Incorrect band/clutch application pressure, low line pressure
Check line pressure at tap. Carry out line pressure and stall speed tests. See the line pressure chart for specification. If pressures are low, check the following component: reverse clutch.

Fluid Filter and Seal Assembly
Filter, plugged, damaged
Install new filter and seal assembly.

Filter seal damaged, missing

Main Control Assembly
Screw out of torque specification
Tighten to specification.

Gasket damaged, off location
Inspect and install a new gasket.

Separator plate damaged
Inspect for damage. Repair as required.

2-3 shift valve (203), 3-4 shift valve (204), reverse modulator valve (205), spring, damaged, missing, misassembled, stuck bore damaged
Inspect for damage. If damaged, install a new main control. If parts are missing, install new parts or main control. If misassembled, reassemble correctly. Do not stone, file or sand valves. This will remove the anodized finish and may result in further main control or transmission damage.

Wrong component used in rebuild
Verify that correct components were used.

Pump Assembly
Bolts not tightened to specifications
Tighten bolts to specifications.

Pump damaged, leaking
Inspect for damage. Repair as required.

Direct Clutch Assembly
Clutch assembly burnt, worn, check ball leaking in clutch piston, piston seal rings damaged, friction or steel plates damaged
Carry out air pressure test. Inspect for damage. Repair as required.

Reverse Band
Burnt, damaged
Inspect for damage. Repair as required.

Servo piston, seals, gasket or cover damaged
Inspect and install new piston, seals or gasket as required.

Reverse Drum
One way clutch damaged
Inspect for damage. Repair as required.

Bearing damaged
Inspect for damage. Repair as required.

Drum damaged
Inspect for damage. Repair as required.

Hope this gives you some direction.

Thanks for your reply!

I guess I'll have to check all that out, but what I don't understand is the transmission was working fine, neutral, reverse, etc. All i did was flush the fluid, install new filter/gasket, and fill fluid. now it's stuck in gear. Why won't it at least go in neutral?

I'd almost hazard a guess that the new solenoid isn't getting a good ground, that when you were in there something got knocked loose? Just a maybe.

Thanks for your reply, totality plausible, but the next day i took out the new one and put the old one back in, I'll try to put a volt meter on the solenoids this weekend.

Might check the filter and seals incase one got messed up during installation since that can be a cause. Anything that might be affecting the pressure.

Okay, here goes....ya did a flush and it went down hill from there.....ya got trash in the screen at the dep solenoid. spend the hundred bucks and replace the dep solenoid. While you are there, install the factory recommended shift kit. You won't believe the performance, fuel economy and overall shift improvements. I don't flush these transmissions, it is alot better to just do a filter/ fluid change every 15-20K miles.

Thanks for your reply, not sure if that was a question, or suggestion. I bought a performance valve body for a few hundred dollars on ebay. It came with the solenoids and shift kit pre installed. Bought an inch LB torque wrench, installed by the book and I have the same issue. Believe it or not, it shifts much better from 1-3, but there is still no reverse, it wants to go forward in reverse, and slips out of all gears, and a lot of flare as you would imagine. wtf?

also it will move forward and reverse with no pressure (engine off) in neutral and reverse, so it's not "stuck in forward clutch".

WOW! do you have any history on the valve body? Is it used? Either the valvebody wasn't done right or there is damage to the internals from the previous valvebody. If there is ever a valvebody problem and the tranny is kept running, eventually there will be damage to the internals. Also, be sure the valvebody is torqued to specs as well as in order, this is very important to the valves being able to move freely. One stuck valve and it will spell trouble.
