Unhappy 93 Ranger rear end locks up

New to the site guys so bear with me
Just bought my 17 year old a 93 ranger 2 wheel drive 3 liter in pretty decent shape. Today he came home and told me he smelled burning rubber on his way home from school. I went out and looked at the truck. It looks like the rear end is locking up in neutral. At first I thought it was a sticky e brake. We pulled the wheels off and the brakes look good. I had him sit in the truck, with it in neutral, while pushing the truck forward I watched the rear end as it locked up. It rolls free'ly for about 5 feet before it locks up. The differential seems to torq forward when the wheels lock.
I'm a Chevy guy and I've never had an issue like this so I'm at a loss. I like the ranger and the boy is bummed cause he can't drive it.
Any idea's???

Sounds like the spider gears broke. Pull the rear cover and take a look
