Default Sometimes clutch slips?

Full story: 1994, 4.0L, 5-speed, 120,000 miles. Going up a hill, fully loaded, the clutch slipped and the engine revved to about 4000 rpm, then caught gradually and was OK. 3000 miles later same thing, 1000 miles later same thing. Clutch engages near top of pedal travel. Works fine usually, except for a sound like gravel swishing in a jar at max torque. Are high-performance clutches necessary, helpful? What to do?
P.S. I'm Canadian, FORD charges $140/hr. The local shops want $1500 to do the clutch properly.

Wait until the exchange rate is good and come to the states and have it done at half the price. Now seriously have you thought about doing it yourself? It is not that hard just remember to get the flywheel resurfaced and get a shim for it. Look online for like center force clutches they come in a kit with the pressure plate and alignment tool.
