my gear ratio doesn't make sense
I have a 92 ranger, 4 cyl, 4wd, 5 speed that supposedly has 4:10 gear ratio. But it seems like it is geared higher than that. The sticker in the door says axle code 87 which means 7.5 in rear end and 4:10 gears. But I can travel down the interstate at 70mph at 2000 rpms. So does this make sense? The truck feels sluggish as well like it should be geared higher.

Could be a different door sticker but the door is original.

As far as I know all 2nd gen 4 cylinders came with 4:10 gear ratios.

My speedo doesn't even show 100mph. It only goes to 85. Can you tell me what your rpms are if your going 45mph in 4th gear?

Re: my gear ratio doesn't make sense
He gave it to you as 100, he means kilometres per mile, which translates into 62 miles per hour, but 60 mph is close enough.

Re: my gear ratio doesn't make sense
What size tires? It does seem abnormally low for a 4cyl.
Chock the front wheels, jack the back of the truck up, put her in neutral with parking brake off. Do the old trick of counting how many times the the driveshaft rotates for every one rotation of the tire. If the driveshaft (ie pinion gear) rotates just over 4 times for one rotation of the tire (ie ring gear), you have approx 4.10.
Your last comment about it feeling sluggish and needing a higher gear ratio.....what you may be trying to say is you need a lower gear ratio (numerically higher). That and it's got 100hp on a really good day. lol.

Yes, I'm sorry. I worded it wrong but you understood what I was saying. I meant it feels like it should be geared lower. I might have to do what you said and try that old trick. It may be my only true way to find out what is really under my truck.

what do you mean by it seems low? Do you mean my rpms should be higher at 70mph than 2 grand? Tire size is probably stock. If they were bigger it would be even more sluggish.

Re: my gear ratio doesn't make sense
Yes should be in the 2,400.
You have a Lima 2.3l they are dogs. I hated mine. Never got good mpg nor could it get out of its own way.

Well I'm in the middle of a 4.0 rebuild to swap in but regardless, I want a true 4:10 gear ratio with whatever engine I have in it.

This my Lima has 4.10 and 31 and at 70 it's right around 2400 rpm. Gas milage? What is gas milage? Lol that's why I'm swapping in 5.0
