How to shift out of 4WL, 2001 auto 5spd with electric transfer case shift
I've driven my 4WD Ranger since new in '01, but for some reason on this snowy day I had an acute attack of stupid and couldn't get it out of 4W-L to save my life.
I've had the transfer case switch module replaced in the past and thought that was the problem again... So I called the Ford dealer to check on part availability. The friendly tech said, "Nope, closing at 2:00 because of the blizzard... but did you try this?"
And he told me how to do it.
So, here it is...
1. Full stop with engine running.
2. Foot on the brake.
3. Shift to neutral.
4. Turn the switch out of 4W-L.
It worked! I could swear that in the past I've slowed down to a crawl, shifted to neutral while still rolling and switched from 4W-L to 4W-H, but maybe not. Maybe I did and she's just getting tired. Anyway, I hope this saves somebody in the Forum some headache during a snow storm.

Traffic stopped on the upstroke of an icy bridge while we waited for someone in a Crown Vic to be pushed over the crest. I was sliding sideways when I tried to get it started again, so switched to low... never got it out of low for the 2 miles the rest of the way home.
Next time, I'll just let her slide sideways a bit.

Re: How to shift out of 4WL, 2001 auto 5spd with electric transfer case shift
As far as I know that's the standard procedure for getting rangers out of 4wd low. When I was test driving my ranger, I took it to a gravel parking lot to test the 4wd out. After checking that the 4wl worked fine, I couldn't figure out how to get it out. Luckily the original manual was still in there so I whipped it out and was able to shift out of 4wl.

What the dealer told you is per the manual. It will not go into or out 4L unless you follow that exactly. For what it is worth my Jeep Liberty was exactly the same process.
