Default 1996 4R44E, 2001 4R55E trans swap... interchangeable?

I have a 2001 ranger 2wd 4.0 V6 that needs an automatic transmission, the tranny numbers in this model are 4R55E (correct me if I'm wrong) I also have a 1996 ranger 2wd 3.0 V6 (automatic trans as well) the tranny numbers for this model ar 4R44E, I recently blew the head gasket in the 96', I'd rather do a tranny swap than a head gasket job and pull some other parts off the 96 (good ol' soldier had over 250,00 miles!), does anyone know if the 96' 4R44E will fit in the 01' 4.0 v6 2wd? the gear ratio's are the same, but will the bolt patterns of the bellhousings match up? how will the electronics hook up because of the difference in years? being that both trucks are 2wd there shouldnt be any issues with the tail shaft, anyone know of any torque converter or crossmember issues I may run into?

it dont fit.the bell on the motors are different. it would go if both motors are the same bell housing. as for the 4r44e in place of the 4r55e the computer wont know the difference. input shaft is the same.

Will not work for the following reasons.

1. The bell housing for the 4.0 and 3.0 are different. However, you can swap them on the automatic transmissions.

2. The PCM will not be compatible with the 3.0 transmissiono.

3. The wiring harness is different between the years.

I've got a 96 4.0 2wd and need a new tranny. I found a tranny out of an 04 4.0 4wd for $350
Will the 04 tranny fit in my 96 even though the 04 is 4x4? Any help is appreciated!
