Default 2.3L engine...available rear axle ratios???

I ordered my new truck yesterday with 4 Cyl. and five speed manual. I asked if I could order one of the lower ratio rear axles thinking I would get better mileage as I do mostly highway driving. The salesman told me that when he tried to add the different axle (comes standard with 4.10) the computer program would not allow it. HELP! Has anyone here ever been over this ground? The option list shows "Select availability" for all axle ratios which are 4.10:1, 3.73:1, 3.55:1. Is there a way around the computer?

Well, normally the 2.3 auto comes with 4.10:1 gears in the rear end, and the manual comes with 3.73:1 gears. The only way to get around this would be to do a dealer special order, which involves paying more money.

I can confirm, the web site "build your own" application will not let you choose an automatic and 3.73 gears. So he's not jerking you around, it's just what they offer in the different driveline configurations.

Can't see why you couldn't get a 3.55:1 with the manual if that is what you want. I have a 3.45:1 in mine. Make sure it's what you want though. For example, the owner's manual says towing is not recommend for the 3.45:1 ratio differential. Also, my mileage has been about 22 mpg that last couple of fill ups. I don't know if the 2.3L is a more efficient engine and you would get better results. Of course, that big a$$ed cap I'm driving around might be part of the problem. LOL

Thanks for all of the input. I did order a manual five speed not an automatic. He told me it showed a 4.10 rear axle and when he tried to go to the 3.73 it wouldn't let him do it. I am guessing that Ford just doesn't want to give anyone the option to simplify things for them. I am going to ask again as I am ordering new from the dealer so I don't know why it would be more money. Dave

Dealerships are bottom of the pole when it comes to knowing Ford operations, and they will even lie to you if it benefits them. Just call Ford headquarters... they are friendly and will be completely honest with you.

Interesting "call Ford headquarters".......so I went on line to find a number and could not. I will ask the salesman today when I call to see if I can add the stone guard/mudflap option and upgrade the radio. Boy, they really seem to want to force you to buy a Ranger with the 4.0 engine. I could have saved another $900.00 if I had taken a "sport" which only comes with 4.0 and automatic transmission. There were lots of these already built and sitting on the lots. I also asked about a posi rear end and was told it wasn't offered. My old 1990 4X4 was ordered with posi front and back!

Yeah, they've really trimmed down the options list in the last 10 years. They say it enables them to "keep the price down". I call BS, 'cause the price to get "my" truck has gone up 5K in the last 5 years.

It's right on the Ford.com homepage towards the bottom, click "contact" and it takes you here: http://www.ford.com/owner-services/c...t/contact-ford

Thanks guys. I am just sitting here looking over the printed material that the dealer provided me when I purchased the truck. "Available Options" list for a 4Dr. 4X2 Super Cab Styleside 6' box, 125.7" wheelbase XL (861A) (R4E)......down the list are these two entries #1 - "X87 4.10 axle ratio, Included" #2 - X95 3.55 axle ratio, option, no charge". So, why can't he order the 3.55? Salesman did tell me that Ford had problems with a "groan or rumble" at highway speeds with the lower axle ratio so they eliminated it...BUT, why is it still listed then? Would there not be a positive effect on mileage? So, for those who have the 2.3L with five manual and 3.55, is there any problem????? I do intend to call the dealer back again but I can tell you that none of the build it sites will allow anything other than 4.10.

I appreciate all of the input. I have decided to leave well enough alone. If owners are getting this mileage with 4.10's then I guess it's time to get in line. Dave
