I have an opportunity to purchase a 96 explorer rear axle 3.73 l/s with disc brakes for $200. I know I need to move the perches, but can I use the 4.10 gears out of my 04 Edge 4x4 or should I buy new. Also truck has abs, how does this effect the abs system. My current gears have about 185000 on them so I might just get new. Thanks

Explorer is an 8.8 and 31 spline axles. Your truck is either a 7.5 or a 8.8 but only has 28 spline axles. So you can't swap the gears. The explorer rearend is a beefier rearend but you do have 4x4 so the gears will need to be changed before you install.

If both the rear ends are 8.8 you CAN change the gear set (ring and pinon) only regardless of the axle spline. The edge rear end should be a 8.8 just double check, if so you can use the gear set to make the explorer rear 4.10's but you have to reset everything (shims and backlash and so on)

If the 4.10 r&p isn't set up properly, you could be looking at new gears along with all new bearings anyway because the old ones would be sitting in pieces in the bottom of the pumpkin.
