on the inside of the bumper there is a support line of plastic that goes across. i cut just below that to give some support and still take a bunch off. it does help spproach angle and it keeps mud out of there too. Biggest reason for me was mine was cracked.
i used a metal cutoff disc but its not the best idea. i then used a belt sander table to smooth and straighten the cut line as ii did it free hand.

I like your cut valence, it looks really good on a 2006. How far down did you cut from the bottom of the "mouth" or the foglight cutouts? Is it cut level all the way across? It looks like it is. What did you cut it with? I'm thinking that would keep mud from packing up in my bumper, and I could gain some approach angle at the same time.
