Default Resurfacing my 1990 headlights ?

I'm not sure if this has been discussed or not my search skills are not so good.

Can my old pitted, fogged up, cloudy headlights be resufaced? And if so how would I go about it? I was thinking of breaking out a buffer but don't want to go making them any worse.

Thanx

You could probably wet sand them with like 2000 grit or something.

Mother's makes a kit with the powerball. I don't know that it will work for your headlight but I know that it's for headlights.

Someone makes a kit and they suck. I tried it on my dodge and the head lights turned out alright at first then i drove it a little and they got cloudy and scratched again.

I just used Meguirers PlastiX on my yellowed cloudy shitty lenses and they look almost brand new. Its a 92. I did it by hand. If you used a dremel with a polishing wheel it'd prob be even better. Give it a shot, it's only like 7 bucks....

Get any good metal polish paste. Rub in circle in one spot with medium pressure for 2 minutes(use terry towel waxing applicator old t-shirt), wipe off and you'll see you can attempt to wet sand but in most cases it is pointless. Damage happens through the lense, this will remove external yellowing and minor scratches. If your unit is cracked and wet on inside you are out of luck for the most part as the yellowing is from the inside out.

P.S. anyone attempting to use power anything to do the lenses be extremely careful to keep it very well lubed as it'll heat up and blister/burn/mar, in a heartbeat.

^^^^ what he said, if you have moisture on the inside of the headlight, there is nothing you can do. If it's on the outside, you can wet sand with 1500 paper then 2000 paper, and buff it all out with a polish on a machine. No other way around it. Plastic-x, or any other plastic products for your headlights will only clean it up and remove some of the smaller imperfections.

Ok I went with Brasso Metal Cleaner and some old socks. No where near being clear again but there is a rather large improvement in light output. I think I gave my self carpal tunnel syndrome because I had some rather deep pitting and It took almost 2 hours to get all the yellow off, But I'm happy with the out come.

As long as what you used was a paste/cream it'll remove the oxidation from the outside of the lense, once you have that removed look at the lense closely and see if there is cracking and bubbling inside the lense. If there is be happy with what you have if there is not, you can resurface them as mentioned by others by using 800+ grit sand paper and 1500 finishing wet sand to your liking. But if the lense is damaged through you only make it worse and weaker.

Just a FYI, I own a window cleaning company and we resurface lexan bullet proof windows. The methods mentioned by me are proven and 100% safe for your lenses. Most factory lenses are clear coated and it is this finish that first deteriorates. This clearcoat can be sanded down and refinished and finally polished back to luster and clearcoated again. This is the results that the crap'ola refinishing kits show. They do not tell you that most people neglect it for far to long and once the lense is damaged and crackled that these results are not possible. I have refinished headlights with great success but it is not as easy as the kits proclaim. Think of it like the Magic scratch eraser pen thing. We all know better. I use a 3M paint repair kit with polisher pads and sanding pads to get the new look results.

I'm perfectly happy with the improved light output.

And socks is what I used.

Here's what I generally do for headlights:

-tape around the light
-wet sand with 1000 grid paper in 1 direction (up and down motion)
-wet sand with 1500 grid paper in the opposite direction (side to side)
-wet sand with 2000 grid paper in a diagonal motion

I will machine polish the headlight with a 4" cutting pad on a compound (like Meguiar's M105), until all sand marks have been removed, then follow up with a polish (like Meguiar's M205 or Menzerna's SIP) on a 4" polishing pad. When finished, I'll put a few coats of wax like the rest of the car.

Results (these headlights weren't too bad, but the you get the idea)
