To pull this off you do have to use a ton of soap to keep it well lubed (so that you don't leave clay on your paint) but its worth it for me.
i use the same method...works wonders

Yeah, i have a bucket dedicated only to perfectly clean soapy water that i use for the clay lube after Im done with the initial wash. And i have to drop more soap in it once or twice over the course of the job.
I used to use detailer spray but it sucked. No matter how liberally I sprayed the detailer on there I would always leave behind a ton of clay on the paint and the whole thing ended up taking a huge amount of time because u have clean up all that excess spray that dries out on top of buffing out all the clay streaks... such a PITA. And I got tired of using an entire bottle of detailer spray just to clay the truck

I am now going to show off my ignorance and ask what a clay bar is and how is it used?

it is a detailing tool that removes surface contaminats from the paint...and its kinda hard to explain how to use one...just have to keep the paint wet and rub away
