I quit using the spray and foam crap a long time ago. Now I only use gel. Usually Meguiars gel and apply it with the foam applicator. It lasts longer, doesn't sling, and doesn't jack up my white lettering - because you can avoid the lettering altogether.

Whatever is on sale at the parts house. Tire shine is the first thing to go bad on a clean truck. Soak the tire in enough of it and it will eventually just stain the tire shiny. Works for me.

you can also check out this product from Migliore:
http://www.migliorewax.com/tire.html

the thing with Migliore products for trim and rubber is that they are water based and can be applied to achieve multiple effects. By that I mean you apply them to a pad or towel (never directly to surface) and spread the product around. The more you put on the deeper the black looks without looking "wet" or shinny. This is true for these products as well:
swissvax pneu
adam's vrt
einszett vinyl rubber care

the key here is to clean your tires with whatever product you choose/want, and protect it from UVA and UVB rays. The problem with a lot tire products is that they are silicone or petro distillate based, meaning they will actually start breaking down the "natural" protectant in the tires. This is what causes tires to turn brown over time. Once they go brown, you will never be able to turn them back to black without using more tire shine.

you can also clean your tire with a 70/30 alcohol/water mix to remove any previous dressings and such. A quality rubber protectant is water based to cause no actual damage to the tire. Hope this helps

That's the stuff.
Spray it on a paint brush and use that to apply it to the wheels.
That way you don't lose half the spray in the wind and you avoid the drips and pooling on the drive way

a lot of products that use silicone and petroleum in them will be sticky and attract dirt and such... any water based product will repel them
